'Drivers first' initiative postpones I-690 lane closure

Among the list of road work projects that are scheduled for the Syracuse area, one is being delayed indefinitely thanks to a driver-friendly initiative from the governorâ??s office.

According to State DOT spokesman Gene Cilento, the plan to close the right lane of I-690 West between I-81 south and Onondaga Creek has been postponed as Governor Cuomo rolls-out a â??drivers firstâ?? initiative. The initiative seeks to lessen the impact these closures have on commuters by moving road work to off-peak travel hours, like nights and weekends.

There is no word on when the construction will take place.

The planned closure of the West Street ramp has been delayed for a contractor issue, according to Cilento.

Drivers will be detoured from West Genesee Street. Westbound traffic on West Genesee will be detoured north on State Fair Boulevard, west on Hiawatha Boulevard, north on Erie Boulevard, and south on West Fayette Street, back to West Genesee Street. Eastbound traffic will be detoured south on West Fayette Street, north on Geddes Street, back to West Genesee Street. Erie Blvd West traffic will follow the same detours.
