A long-time community center on Syracuse's south side is trying to reopen after unexpectedly closing down two weeks ago.
The Dunbar Center on South State Street closed October 31st after losing its executive director and encountering some financial problems. Dr. L. Micah O. Dexter II, pastor of the New Salem Missionary Baptist Church, says the closing is temporary and they hope to reopen the center after making some necessary repairs to the building.
"The center needs to be open. It is a pillar in the community. It's been around for 90 plus years, soon to be 100 years. The board is working aggressively to keep the doors open," Dexter says.
The Dunbar Center's four remaining employees have been furloughed and parents have been told to find alternative centers for their children.
Dr. Dexter says the board hopes to reopen the Dunbar Center by Christmas.
