East Syracuse voters approve plan to dissolve police department

Voters in the Village of East Syracuse on Wednesday evening decided to abolish their police department. The final vote was 333 people for the plan and 199 against it.

This was the second vote on the issue. Voters rejected a similar plan in October 2012. The plan before voters called for the village to enter a four-year shared services agreement with the town of DeWitt.

With a tax rate of 16.41 percent, the Village of East Syracuse currently has the highest tax rate of any village in Onondaga county. Village leaders estimated a merger with DeWitt would lower the tax rate to 12.98 percent.
