Scene of the crash

An Elbridge man is charged with DWI and vehicular manslaughter following a crash in Skaneateles on April 24 that killed the passenger in his vehicle.

State Police say Michael V. Stern, 24, was speeding in a van around 1:59 a.m. when he hit a tractor-trailer that was making a left hand turn.

Police say the van traveled completely underneath the tanker and came to rest a short distance from it.

Stern sustained serious head injuries and was air lifted to the Upstate Medical Center. The front seat passenger in the van, 26-year-old Patrick J. Hallinan, of Elbridge, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, 50-year-old James T. Whaley, of Pulaski, was not injured in the crash.

Stern is now charged with second degree vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated and unsafe speed.

He was arraigned in the Skaneateles Town Court and remanded to the Onondaga County Justice Center in lieu of $1,000 cash/bond. He is scheduled to return to court on Monday August 19.
