Elderly man killed in Mattydale house fire, son charged with murder and arson

An elderly man is dead, and his son is charged with murder and arson, following a suspicious house fire on Garden City Drive in Mattydale early Friday morning.

Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh tells CNY Central that the house was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. The fire was reported just before 6:00 a.m.

Officials say an elderly man was found dead at the foot of the stairs and a younger man was pulled from the home.

The Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office positively identified the body as 83 year old Robert Y. Teachout.

Walsh says Teachout's son, 56-year-old Robert K. Teachout, has been charged with second degree murder and second degree arson.

Walsh says his son was found in a closed room and is being treated for smoke inhalation. He was arraigned at Upstate University Hospital on Friday.

Friends say 83-year-old Robert Teachout was an active member at the Mattydale American Legion Post. On Friday, black bunting had been hung on the outside of the American Legion building in his memory.

Friends described him as generous, always smiling and ready to help a friend in need. Friends at the Pastime Club on Syracuseâ??s north side said he had been a member for decades and also loved to hunt.

Neighbors say Robert Teachout has two sons.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

According to an obituary, Teachout was a native of Weedsport and retired from Syracuse China in 1992. All services will be private.
