Elmira boy hospitalized after rescued from Chemung River

Authorities say an 8-year-old boy remains hospitalized after he was pulled from a river in New York's Southern Tier while swimming with others.

Local media report that the Elmira boy was rescued from the Chemung River on Friday evening after he went missing while swimming with a group. Police say the boy was under water for about five minutes before he was found in an area of the river under an Elmira bridge.

He was transferred Friday night to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, where he was reported in critical condition over the weekend.

His name hasn't been released by police.

Police say the boy had adult supervision when he went missing.
