End of an era: Demolition of old Cinema North begins in Mattydale
MATTYDALE, N.Y. —
It's the end of an era in Mattydale.
Demolition started early Tuesday morning on the old Cinema North Theater. The theater opened on Christmas day back in 1965 and closed in 1990.
In recent years residents say the long neglected theater had become an eyesore and the Town of Salina pushed to get it demolished.
Those who turned out to see the demolition had fond memories of the theater back when it was open. "It was bittersweet to see it close," Doreen Benedict said. "It was one of the last beautiful theaters. I mean Regal theaters are nice, but this was the Regal. This was the Regal cinemas."
So far there's no official word on what will replace the old theater, but the town says there has been some interest from companies in the past to build a hotel at the site.
