F-M High School hosting forum today on controversial Common Core

he state education commissioner will be in Central New York Tuesday afternoon to talk about the controversial Common Core standards.

Dr. John King will meet with parents and teachers as part of a community forum. It's taking place at Fayetteville-Manlius High school from 3 to 5 p.m.

The Common Core standards have been criticized by educators and parents who say it forces teachers to focus on tests and not on learning.

Dr. King was met with protestors when he was at WCNY in Syracuse last month for a forum. There have even been calls for his resignation. A forum in Poughkeepsie got heated in October and video of the event showed parents shouting him down. Following that meeting, he told reporters "special interests" seemed determined to hijack the forums. After that Dr. King said he was going to stop holding the public forums but changed his mind.

Last month parents, administrators and teachers voiced their concerns and talked about their suggestions at a forum at C.W. Baker High School in Baldwinsville. Lawmakers were there listening to the feedback.
