Fatal collision between van and milk truck in Skaneateles

State police say one man is dead and another is hospitalized after their minivan collided with a milk tanker on a Skaneateles road Wednesday morning.

Police say a 2004 Toyota Sienna van being operated by 24-year-old Michael V. Stern, of Elbridge, was speeding on Jordan Road when it hit the tanker portion of a 2011 Kenworth Tractor-trailer, which was turning left from Stump Road onto Jordan Road.

The van traveled completely underneath the tanker and came to rest a short distance from it.

Stern sustained serious head injuries and was air lifted to the Upstate Medical Center.

The front seat passenger in the van, 26-year-old Patrick J. Hallinan, of Elbridge, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, 50-year-old James T. Whaley, of Pulaski, was not injured in the crash.

The cause of the crash is being investigated.
