Federal prosecutors request consecutive sentences for David Renz

Federal prosecutors in the David Renz case are asking a federal judge to sentence the admitted killer and child rapist to consecutive sentences. In a letter to District Judge Norman Mordue, United States Attorney for the Northern District of New York Richard Hartunian is requesting Renz's sentence for federal child pornography charges run consecutive to his anticipated sentence for murder and rape in Onondaga County Court.

Hartunian points to a United States Supreme Court ruling which allows federal courts to impose sentences that run either consecutively or concurrently with sentences in state criminal cases. The U.S. Attorney wants the judge to know prosecutors are asking for consecutively.

It is not certain whether this request indicates the government will not seek the death penalty for Renz on any federal charges.

Renz is scheduled for sentencing on federal child pornography charges on March 19th at 10:00 a.m.
