FEMA grants $1 million for rain gauges in upstate New York

The Federal Emergency Management Agency will contribute $1 million toward the installation of rain gauges along the Mohawk River, Oswego River and the upper-Hudson River Basin.

Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand say the gauges will help provide flood warnings in those upstate areas. The federal agency is paying for 75 percent of the $1.3 million project. The grant will fund the installation of the gauges to be used in combination with existing monitoring devices.

The senators say unprecedented flooding in recent years from hurricanes and tropical storms make clear the need to notify communities of impending floods.
