Fierce wind chills in CNY cause frostbite fears, intense lake snow north

Frostbite remains a concern through today as a combination of strong gusty west-southwesterly winds coupled with air temperatures falling to near or below zero this morning will allow wind chills to drop to between -20 to -25 (below zero) quite often. The wind chill could approach -30 (below zero). We are also carefully watching an intense band of heavy lake effect snow east-northeast of Lake Ontario. Inside the lake effect snow bands, snowfall rates of 1 to 4" per hour will be possible at times. Here is the very latest with respect to weather alerts.

A wind chill WARNING has been issued for all of central New York except Jefferson, Lewis and Herkimer counties.A wind chill ADVISORY has been issued for Jefferson, Lewis and Herkimer counties.

Wind chill warnings and advisories are issued when strong winds will combine with very cold temperatures to create dangerously cold conditions for exposed skin over the next 12-24 hours. As mentioned above wind chills will commonly drop to -20 to -25 (below zero) and could approach -30 (below zero).Frostbite occurs in 30 minutes with a wind chill of -20 (below zero) on any exposed skin.Frostbite occurs in 10 minutes with a wind chill of -40 (below zero) on any exposed skin.If your area has wind chill warnings or advisories, here is what you should do:-- If you must be outdoors, use common sense and dress warmly.-- Make sure that all exposed skin is covered. If possible, avoid prolonged exposure to the cold to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.

A lake effect snow WARNING is in effect for Oswego, Jefferson, Lewis, and Northern Herkimer counties through 1pm Wednesday.A lake effect snow ADVISORY is in effect for northern Oneida county until 10am Tuesday.A lake effect snow warning means that significant snow is likely in localized areas within the warned area. A large difference in snowfall is likely even within the warned area. Total snowfall accumulations of locally over 5 feet are possible over southern Jefferson county through Wednesday night, with significant blowing and drifting likely.

If your area has a lake effect warning, here is what you should do: -- In lake effect snow squalls, the weather can vary from locally heavy snow in narrow bands to clear skies just a few miles away.-- If you will be traveling across the region be prepared for rapid changes in road and visibility conditions.-- Know which county you live in, and where you are in relation to these heavy snow squalls.-- If you need to travel, be prepared for very difficult driving conditions inside the bands of heavier snow and where the snow squalls have already been.-- Have a winter storm kit ready in your car in case you are stranded.-- Keep an eye on Interactive Doppler and Triple Doppler radars on CNYcentral.com.-- Keep your phone with your CNYcentral mobile app turned on so if warnings are issued you will know.-- Periodically check NBC-3, CBS-5 and CW-6 for updates on the weather and possible issuance of lake effect snow warnings and advisories.-- Know which county you live in, and where you are in relation to these heavy snow squalls.-- If you need to travel, be prepared for very difficult driving conditions inside the bands of heavier snow and where the snow squalls have already been.-- Have a winter storm kit ready in your car in case you are stranded.
