Wed, 11 Apr 2012 12:05:00 GMT — A fire broke out at an apartment at 403 Bear Street in Syracuse early Tuesday morning. Four adults and two children were in the building. Everyone was able to get out of the building safely. Officials say Jimmy Smith alerted the tenants of the fire. He said he heard a strange noise and took action. "I heard the crackling and popping and all of the sudden poof! I knew someone was wrong instantly. So I ran downstairs to alert my neighbors and let them know to get out of the house immediately." Smith then went back upstairs and found the fire in the attic. Firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof of the building to vent the smoke. There was no damage to the exterior of the building. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. The Red Cross is assisting the victims.
