Fire destroys large farmhouse in LaFayette

Firefighters work at the scene on Apulia Road Wednesday.

One woman is homeless after a fire destroyed her farmhouse in LaFayette Wednesday morning.

Onondaga County 911 reports around 9:00 a.m. a call came in for a fire at 2141 Apulia Road, near Dodge Road off of Route 20. LaFayette Fire Chief Greg Hoxie tells CNY Central that a passerby called in the fire, which severely burned a large two-story wood frame home. Officials say the sole occupant was not home at the time.

Hoxie says the house, whish may be more than 100 years old, is a "total loss". The walls are starting to collapse and the roof and second floor have almost completely caved in.

The fire appears to have started in the back of the house, but Hoxie says the heating system was not on last night.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries have been reported, and the resident's identity has not been released. The Red Cross is assisting at the scene.

Apulia Road remains blocked to traffic while firefighters continue to work at the scene.
