Authorities say a tractor-trailer hauling cattle has caught fire on the Thruway outside Rochester, killing more than 30 calves on board.
The state police Thruway detail says the truck was traveling west on Interstate 90 when a tire went flat and then caught fire shortly after midnight Wednesday. The fire spread to the trailer carrying 176 calves.
Troopers say 143 calves were off-loaded, but another 33 either died in the fire or had to be euthanized because of injuries.
The burning truck shut down both westbound lanes for about 20 minutes in the Genesee County town of Le Roy, just southwest of Rochester.
The damaged trailer was removed from the scene by 5:30 a.m.
Troopers say the driver and owner of the vehicle, Jeffrey Foss of Vernon, wasn't injured.
