Volunteer fire departments are holding recruiting open houses later this month, in a statewide effort to attract more volunteers.
Angelo Messina, long-time member of the Owasco Volunteer Fire Department, says the open houses are a good way to see the different jobs within departments---not just firefighting--and a first step toward being involved in organizations that support community efforts, beyond health and safety. He points out there are lots of non-fire fighting needs in the volunteer organizations, and actually in most departments, there are more medical-related than fire calls. The open houses are also a way of finding out the benefits--tax reductions and more--for volunteers.
The open houses are set for Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22---to find one near you, check the Firemen's Association of the State of New York (FASNY) website
