Five families homeless after Saturday morning fire

Fire has heavily damaged five apartments and left 11 homeless in Auburn.

Auburn firefighters are still on the scene of a Saturday morning fire that heavily damaged five apartments, and left 11 people homeless.

The alarm, to 23 Barber Street, which is a few blocks west of Auburn's Correctional Facility, came in at 7:29 Saturday morning.

Cayuga County 911 tells us one person was taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

The Red Cross was called to help, and says five apartments in the building were damaged. Food, clothing and housing are being offered to assist the displaced residents. One family is in a hotel, 3 families are now staying with relatives, and two people were away on a trip, and are now on their way back to Auburn.

The fire reportedly started in one apartment unit, and investigation of the cause is underway.
