A Florida man is charged with murder in the first degree after intentionally striking a New York State Trooper on I-81 in Broome County Thursday afternoon.

State Police say Almond Upton, 60, of Melrose, Florida was arraigned in Town of Chenango Court. He was sent to the Broome County Jail without bail.

Around 12 p.m. on Thursday, Trooper Christopher Skinner was conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 81 in Chenango Bridge, just north of Exit 6 in Broome County. State police say he was killed instantly when he was struck by Upton's vehicle.

Troopers say Upton continued driving for a short while before pulling over, jumping out of the vehicle and running into the woods. He was arrested after a short search.

Upton also intentionally hit two other vehicles on the highway before striking Trooper Skinner, according to state police.
