Anthony R. Maddox

A Fort Drum soldier died Monday in Landstuhl, Germany, of a non-combat related incident that happened in Andar, Afghanistan.

Specialist Anthony R. Maddox, age 22 of Port Arthur, Texas, was a petroleum supply specialist with the 10th Mountain Division, 10th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team.

The incident in Andar is under investigation.

Fort Drum officials say Maddox joined the Army in January 2011 after training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Fort Lee, Virginia. He deployed to Afghanistan in January 2013.

Maddox's awards and decorations include, among others, the Army Achievement Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Maddox is survived by his father, mother and stepfather.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has directed that flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff on Friday in honor of Maddox.
