The Department of Defense has ordered an Environmental Impact Study, as it considers Fort Drum as a potential missile defense site.
The Missile Defense Agency started the project last year, and has narrowed its list of sites to four. Besides Fort Drum, Camp Ravenna in Ohio, Fort Custer in Michigan and the Portsmouth SERE Training Area in Maine are being considered.
The Environmental Impact Study will take two years and will consder potential impacts on land use, water resources, air quality, transportation, socioeconomics and other factors established by the National Environmental Policy Act. Public involvement in the study will be encouraged.
