Fugitive from Illinois drops 19 inch machete in struggle with Auburn Police

An Auburn Police officer on routine patrol happened to check behind a closed business and found a fugitive from Illinois who is also a sex offender.

Two officers approached a suspicious vehicle parked behind 241 Grant Avenue at about 1:26 am Thursday when they saw there were a man and woman inside.

During the investigation, the suspect gave officers a false name and birth date. He was found in possession of 2.9 grams of marijuana, and as officer tried to place him under arrest, he pushed one of the officers and tried to run.

During the struggle, the officers say the man kept reaching for his lower right leg, when a 19â?? sheathed machete fell out of his pant leg. The officers had to use a taser to subdue the man.

The suspect was later identified as 21-year-old Alejandro Meza, of 2 Schwartz Drive, Apartment #205 in Auburn. He is a registered sex offender and fugitive from Illinois, currently wanted by the Elgin, Illinois Police Department as a known gang member of the MS-13 street gang.

Meza was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, resisting arrest, false impersonation and unlawful possession of marijuana.

He is currently being held in the Auburn Police Departmentâ??s temporary holding facility.

The woman who was in the car with Meza cooperated with police and was not charged. The investigation showed that she and Meza were in the car for a sexual encounter.

The police officers were not injured in the incident.
