Fulton mother sentenced for baby's death

Sara Landers

A Central New York woman has been sentenced for the death of her 9-month-old daughter, who was left alone inside a camper during 90-degree weather last summer.

Oswego County authorities say Reba Jean Barton died from the extreme heat inside the closed camper after being left alone for about two hours last July 5. The camping trailer was in the Town of Volney, which is 23 miles northwest of Syracuse.

The child's mother, 22-year-old Sara Landers of Fulton, was charged with manslaughter. She pleaded guilty last month to criminally negligent homicide. In exchange for that plea, she was sentenced Friday morning to one and a third to four years in state prison.

Landers went swimming and left her daughter in the camper while temperatures outside topped 90 degrees. The infant died of hyperthermia.
