Governor attends groundbreaking at Inner Harbor, announces second hotel

It was be Governor Andrew Cuomo's second visit to Syracuse's Inner Harbor in nine months. He attended a groundbreaking at the Inner Harbor for the Starwood Hotel's Aloft Hotel, which is scheduled to open next summer.

Plans also call for a second Starwood Hotel, under the Element Hotel brand, which would cost $18 million and will feature four floors and 130 rooms over 75,000 square feet.

The Inner Harbor project involves not only the hotel, but also a residential complex, a satellite campus for OCC, and mixed-use commercial and office development. Cuomo says the project is a sign the upstate economy is coming back.

"We've had a lot of plans over the years, we just haven't had enough action," Cuomo said at the groundbreaking. "Now you're seeing the reverse. You're seeing success beget success and you feel a different energy in Syracuse."

Construction on the second hotel is expected to start next year, with the hotel opening in 2018.
