Herkimer woman arrested in connection to 12 malnourished dogs

New York State police have arrested the owner of 12 dogs that were found malnourished in a home in Herkimer in mid-October.

65 year-old Barbara Smith faces 12 counts of failure to provide sustenance after troopers were called to her house on Route 28. A passerby had seen several dogs outside Smith's home that appeared malnourished.

The dogs were taken from the home on October 13. Police say they were underfed and suffered from mange and lyme disease.

Smith also faces 12 counts of not having a licensed dog and 12 counts of not having rabies vaccinations.

She was arraigned in Herkimer Town Court and released on her own recognizance. Smith is expected to return to court on December 10.
