Honor Flight Syracuse planning missions in 2013

Syracuse's first Honor Flight mission was last year, now they're organizing to send Veterans to Washington this year

The Syracuse group that helps say thank you to veterans for their service is planning this year's flights to Washington, DC.

Honor Flight was set up to pay tribute to World War II vets, but is also offering the day trip to 'younger' veterans, including from the Korea and Vietnam conflicts, and according to organizer John Paddock, also to any terminally ill veteran.

The flight to and from the nation's capital and the tours there are the visible part of the operation, but Paddock says the 'behind the scenes' is huge, too, with teams or volunteers working to organize the veterans, and companions to accompany them. The logistics also involve arranging for flights, and for the 'welcome home' party at day's end.

Fundraising is also a major part of the year round effort, and contributions are welcome, as are volunteers.

Honor Flight Syracuse hopes to have its first mission of the year in late April.
