Honoring veterans and veterans to be

Besides military observances, Central New Yorkers are offering tributes and thanks to veterans and active military this weekend

It's a long holiday weekend for many Central New Yorkers, with special attention to those who've served, or are serving in our military.

At Syracuse's Zoo, there's free admission for active military, veterans and their families on Sunday and Monday. Zoo goers are asked to present military or veteran organization ID cards or military discharge documents or wear your uniform for verification for complimentary Veterans Day access to the Zoo.

Liverpool Library is doing veterans appreciation through Monday, as well, with 'hugs and kisses'--candies and certificates for a free book from the ongoing book sale. The library is also collecting donations for the Gregory J Harris Military Comfort Room at Hancock Airport: individual sized, packaged snacks and drinks, as well as cans of ground coffee for the privately-supported effort to make layovers a little more 'homey'.

Syracuse University is also planning a Veterans Day observance at Hendricks Chapel. Starting at 5am, members of military-linked groups (including ROTC) will be reading the names of 6500 who've fallen in the line of duty, from the Chapel steps. At 11 there's a memorial and tribute service.
