I-690 bridge construction begins, detours posted

Detour signs direct bicyclists and pedestrians around the Creekwalk closure, due to Syracuse road construction.

Construction began Monday on the first phase of I-690 bridge construction over Onondaga Creek near West Street in Syracuse.

Several detours are posted for the interchange but the project is being done to limit disruptions.

The first phase includes closing the right lane of West Street over West Genesee Street, which will prevent commuters from getting on I-690 eastbound.

The project is expected to take six weeks, with an expected completion in mid-May.

Phase II will include closing access to West Street from I-690 westbound and I-81 Northbound exit to I-690 Westbound in June. Towards the end of the summer, it will prevent drivers from going from northbound West Street to Westbound I-690.

The Creekwalk under I-690 has been closed since last Tuesday for pedestrians in preparation for construction and has been rerouted through Franklin Square.
