Destiny USA has grown tremendously in the last couple of years, bringing in many more tourists from out of town, even out of the country.
As we reported Monday, bus tours have increased by 77-percent.
Destiny USA had to raise the roof to fit in two massive IMAX screens and crews are working around the clock to get them ready for summer movies. Destiny General Manager Rob Schoeneck promises the theaters will be ready to show imax versions of the new Superman movie "Man of Steel" on June 14th. Just down the hall from the IMAX theaters, another crew is putting together the interior of what will be an adult playground of video games and beverages at Dave and Buster's. Shoeneck says the Syracuse location is on track to open sometime in August.
Critics were skeptical of the Destiny USA expansion while it was being built but Schoeneck says the mall is already attracting tourists from across the northeastern U.S. And Canada.
"People looked at the project and thought we might go to 30 million visitors, I think we're well on our way there maybe even going over that," said Schoeneck.
A small army of carpenters and electricians are also putting together 24 bowling lanes at the Revolutions bar and restaurant on Destiny's second floor. Yet another crew is working on the the Texas de Brazil restaurant on the first floor. In total, 100,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and entertainment space are on track to open this summer.
Allen Stevenson drove in from the Ontario region of Canada with his family to visit Destiny. He said the mix of shopping and entertainment would keep them coming back.
"I think anytime a venue has more to offer for the whole family, obviously it's a lot more value added. You can come to one place, do a lot more stuff, have a good dinner, spend more time here - spend more money as well," said Stevenson with a laugh. The Amazing Mirror Maze, which takes guests through a hall of mirrors, could open as soon as this weekend. You can check it out in the third-floor expansion, in the enter tainment wing.
Schoeneck says there are other upcoming tenants that he knows of, and hopes to be able to announce in the weeks ahead.
