Impact of massive Sbarro pizza downsizing felt in Central New York

Sbarro is closing 155 of its locations, mostly in mall food courts where traffic has declined. The company says the only store it will close in the Syracuse or Utica areas is in Clay. The food court location at Great Northern Mall is closing. The company says it has an employee hotline set up to answer questions at (800) 392-0168.

Nationwide, the closures affect 1,400 workers. Sbarro owns 400 locations in North America. The closures do not affect 175 Sbarro locations that are owned by franchisees.

The announcement comes after the privately held company had touted a revamped pizza recipe in 2012 in hopes of boosting sales.
