      Infant dies in Watertown crash on I-81


      A baby is dead after a crash Saturday morning in Watertown.

      ew York State Police say 21-year-old Quartez Smith was driving south on I-81 near the Watertown Center exit around 5:30 am when he reportedly became drowsy. His 2003 Chevy Trailblazer left the highway and went into the median, hitting an earth embankment at U-turn number 36.



      The car became airborne and hit a portable trailer holding an electronic Department of Transportation sign parked in the U-turn. State police said the vehicle landed in the median just south of the U-turn and flipped several times.

      he five-month-old infant was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital and later pronounced dead.

      and two other adults were treated for minor injuries.

      olice say the family lives in Virginia and was traveling home after a visit to Canada.



      State police are continuing to investigate.
