Inmate arrested after assaulting an officer, attempting to escape

Seneca County inmate has been charged with assault, attempted escape and promoting prison contraband after an altercation with a staff member.

Seneca County Sheriff's Investigators say 42-year-old Aaron Russ struck a corrections officer in the back of the head with a laundry bag while he was making his rounds. The bag contained several heavy items. Russ forced his way out of the Maximum Housing Segregation unit, knocked the corrections officer to the floor, stole his keys and attempted to unlock a secure door. Corrections officers responded to a call for assistance and took control of Russ without further incident. At no time was Russ ever able to leave the secure housing unit area. Russ has been placed in a secure disciplinary segregation unit.

The corrections officer suffered injuries to the head and hand and was treated at Geneva General Hospital. He's expected to make a full recovery.

Russ is being held in the Seneca County Correctional Facility without bail following an assault on a Sheriff's Deputy on July 9, 2013. In that case, Sheriff's deputies responded to a call from the Russ family who reported he had been acting erratically after not having taken his psychotropic medication. Russ repeatedly punched a Sheriff's Deputy in the face and head and was taken into custody after the Deputy fired two rounds striking Russ in the arm.
