Inmate arrested for sending sexually explicit letters to child from jail

An Oswego County inmate was arrested Thursday for allegedly sending sexually explicit letters to children from jail, and additionally for an arrest warrant for allegedly having sexual contact with a child in Florida.

Deputies say James Ray LaPoint, 40, allegedly sent sexually explicit letters to children between February and May while he was incarcerated in the Oswego County Jail.

LaPoint was additionally arrested on a fugitive from justice warrant out of Florida for sexual activity with a child (sexual battery). Deputies say the warrant is based on incidents that happened during 2012 and 2013 while LaPoint and the victim both resided in Lee County, Florida.

LaPoint was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. He was arraigned in the in City of Oswego Court and remanded to the Oswego County Jail without bail.

He is scheduled to return to Oswego City Court on July 9 and to Oswego County Court on June 14.
