Blowing snow causing white-out conditions forced the shutdown of a southbound stretch of Interstate 81 between Watertown and Syracuse on Monday.
The State Department of Transportation closed I-81 between Exits 37 (Sandy Creek) and 36 (Pulaski) in Oswego County because of several accidents caused by the weather. The highway was closed for a few hours, but has since reopened.
Several dozen schools from western New York to the North Country called off classes or delayed their start as the region is blasted by another round of snow and high winds gusting to more than 40 mph in some areas.
The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning for most of western New York until late Tuesday morning.
