Interstate 81 between Exit 34 in Mexico and Exit 48 in Pamelia has reopened in both directions.
Barricades were set up Tuesday night to prevent drivers from getting on the highway and driving into dangerous winter weather conditions.
On Monday, Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a State of Emergency for New York while a major winter storm made its way through Western New York and the North Country. As part of that declaration, Cuomo shut down I-81 from Exit 31 in Brewerton to Exit 45 in Watertown. That was a soft closure, but drivers who tried to get on the highway still risked getting a ticket.
On Tuesday, the shutdown was changed to a hard closure from Exit 34 through Exit 48, to the border with Canada. Anyone driving that route was detoured onto Route 11 instead.
