Interstate 81 southbound just south of the City of Syracuse has been re-opened. For about two hours this afternoon the highway was turned into a parking lot as a lengthy string of cars and trucks came to a standstill. The heavy snow, icy roads and multiple crashes led to the halting of traffice and ultimately the closing of the highway by New York State Police.

The road was closed due to bad weather and several crashes that happened throughout the day.

CNYCentral Meteorologist Matt Stevens reported live from the middle of the interstate and explained in detail the unique icing conditions that occured due to the nature of this March snow storm. The first phase of heavy rain and subsequent sudden drop in temperatures laid down a layer of ice that was the covered by several inches of snow.
