State Police in Alexandria Bay, Jefferson County, noticed fire and smoke in the distance while on routine patrol near County Route 2 in the Town of Orleans. The troopers say they investigated and found a barn fully engulfed in flames, and the fire had spread to the home next door.
Troopers say they knocked on the windows of the home and told 85-year-old Richard J. Kennell, who was inside, that his house and barn were on fire.
Kennell told troopers he had no idea his house was on fire and immediately left the home.
State Police then went in the home, which they say was then fully engulfed in flames, and found 85-year-old Phyllis Kennell, who is partially disabled.
Phyllis Kennell had to be carried out of the house. Richard and Phyllis Kennell were both treated for minor smoke inhalation and released to family members.
The investigation is continuing.
