A Jefferson County man was killed Wednesday after high winds caused the small building he was in to collapse.

According to New York State Police, officers responded to an outside building located at 41045 Cross Road in the Town of Theresa.

An investigation revealed that Joanas L. Swartzentruber, 36, was engaged in maple syrup production in a sugar shack outbuilding with two other family members when high winds collapsed the building, pinning him against the ground with debris on top.

Police said a 15-year-old boy was able to escape before the collapse and alerted neighbors who used jacks to lift the building debris off Swartzentruber and extricated him.

Swartzentruber was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation of the incident is continuing.
