He is a familiar face to law enforcement and now John Balloni is officially running for Sheriff.
He currently serves as Chief Deputy in the Sheriff's department and has the backing of current Sheriff Kevin Walsh.
Balloni is pushing for a behavioral health center to be built at the Onondaga County Justice Center to solve overcrowding issues. He says it would cut the cost of overtime and save taxpayers money. "We have a shortage of financial resources, a shortage of personnel as well as the ongoing challenges of violent crime," Balloni said. "You see it in the media everyday. We live it everyday."
Balloni began his career with the Baldwinsville Police where he served for 23 years, retiring as Chief in 2000. He spent the next decade working for Onondaga County 911, becoming Commissioner in 2006. He later returned to law enforcement in the Sheriff's Office in 2010.
DeWitt Police Chief Gene Conway has already thrown his hat in the ring along with retired Sheriff's deputy Toby Shelley and Crayg Dykes, a sergeant in the Sheriff's office.
