Jordan-Elbridge High School to close early Tuesday after passing of teaching aide

ordan-Elbridge High School will dismiss at 10:20 Tuesday morning so students and staff can attend the funeral of teaching aide and former student Heather Ely.

The 28-year-old Ely was battling cancer (Hodgkin's Lymphoma) and passed away on Friday at Upstate University Hospital.

Ely graduated from Jordan-Elbridge in 2004 and was an accomplished lacrosse goalie. She also played soccer, tennis and basketball. The district says " Mark Fietta described Ely as 'a fighter' who 'proved herself time and time again by aiming at her goals and achieving them'.â??

Ely went on to play lacrosse at Herkimer County Cmmunity College, where she was named a Junior College All-American.

"It's a sad day in the Jordan-Elbridge community," Superintendent James Froio said. "One of our brightest was taken too soon. We will miss her."

According to Ely's obituary, funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Elbridge Community Church. Calling hours will be 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at the church.
