A Romulus man accused of killing his son to collect $700,000 in life insurance gave interrogators differing accounts of the death during almost 10 hours of interrogation.

The Syracuse Post-Standard reports a video played during a Seneca County court hearing Monday shows 53-year-old Karl Karlsen admitting he was present when a truck fell on Levi Karlsen as he worked under it in the family garage in Romulus.

Karlsen said it was an accident and couldn't explain why he left without getting help.

Karlsen initially told investigators he returned from a family funeral to find his son dead under the truck in November 2008. He has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and insurance fraud.

Prosecutors in Calaveras County, Calif., have reopened an investigation into a 1991 fire there that killed Karlsen's first wife, Christena Karlsen.
