LED lighting upgrade for Thruway part of "Go Green" movement

An LED lighting upgrade to the Thruway and Canal system is projected to save the Thruway Authority about 20 percent on electricity costs.

It's part of the Thruway Authority's push to "Go Green" during Earth Week. Governor Andrew Cuomo says the upgrade is part of New York's effort to push forward with efforts to increase energy efficiency and reduce costs by adopting green technologies.

Right now the upgrades are in process, or have been completed, at nearly 20 toll barriers and plazas. The Thruway Authority says the upgrade will reduce its annual electric bill, which currently is $2 million.

The lighting upgrade will also provide improved visibility. LED light bulbs are also extremely durable and can last up to 10 years while using less energy.
