Little League official calls field damage in Oriskany 'heartbreaking'
The Central New York flooding disaster struck the Little League fields in Oriskany very hard Friday morning.
There is at least three feet of water on the fields and debris everywhere. The full extent of the damage will not be known until the water recedes. The fields are on the banks of the Oriskany Creek, which broke its banks and pushed up onto the fields, tearing down fencing. The organizers of the league had just recently finished cleaning up and renovating the fields after the damage from Irene in 2011.
Standing near the giant pools of water on Friday evening, Josh Shannon, a league official, said, "It breaks my heart to see this, it just breaks my heart. This work to fix up the fields was a lot of work done by very few people, and now to see it likes this, it is just devastating."
Shannon says he feels terribly for the children who play here and promises that somehow, the fields will be ready for play next season.
