Action News would like to pass along our condolences to the family and friends of a longtime WSTM journalist. We received word Thursday morning that Jerry Barsha has died at the age of 83.

Jerry began working here at Channel 3 and our then-sister radio station WSYR back in 1957. He spent 32 years behind the radio microphone and in front of the televison news cameras before retiring. During that time Jerry was honored numerous times for his work, including a Syracuse Press Club lifetime achievement award, and was enshrined on the Press Club's Wall of Distinction.

Barsha, a Brooklyn native, came to Syracuse to attend Syracuse University where he graduated with a dual degree in radio broadcasting and political science. After a brief stint at an Albany-area radio station, Jerry returned to Syracuse.

In addition to his on-air work, Jerry taught broadcasting classes at Onondaga Community College for 35 years.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 51 years, Martha, four daughters and six grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Suskind Funeral Home in Syracuse and are incomplete at this time.
