Macy's plans to open some of its stores at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving evening

Macy's will open some of its stores on Thanksgiving evening, to get a jump on Black Friday sales.

One major department store is breaking a 155-year old tradition this Thanksgiving. Macy's is joining a list of retailers that plan to jumpstart "Black Friday" sales by opening that Thursday evening. The store is usually closed on the holiday.

The popular department store says it will open some of its stores at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving evening, and keep them open for 24-hours straight.

At this point, we don't know whether any Central New York shops would participate, but as the holiday shopping season creeps closer, we will be sure to update you.

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, traditionally opens the profitable Christmas shopping season.

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which started in 1924, is the second-oldest Thanksgiving parade in the United States.
