Man arrested following 2 month investigation into heroin sales in Utica

Ruvejd Smajlovic

A Utica man was arrested for trafficking heroin in the city and surrounding area.

Members of the State Police Gun Investigation Unit and the Community Narcotics Enforcement Team arrested 20-year-old Ruvejd Smajlovic following a two month investigation.

Officers stopped a vehicle Smajlovic was a passenger in at about 12:35 pm on Genesee Street in Utica.

Troopers say Smajlovic tried to throw a quantity of heroin and run, but officers were able to detain him. They executed a search warrant during the detainment, and found marijuana, in addition to the heroin he tried to get rid of.

Smajlovic was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell.

He was arraigned and is being held in the Oneida County Jail on $10,000 bail. The investigation is ongoing, and troopers say more charges are pending.
