Man arrested for death of child

      Jay Barboni in court Thursday

(AP) A central New York man has been charged in the slaying of his girlfriend's 15-month-old son earlier this week.

Police in Fulton charged 30-year-old Jay Barboni of Liverpool with second-degree murder Thursday.

Authorities say he was with Nick Taylor when the toddler died Monday at his mother's apartment in Fulton, 23 miles north of Syracuse.

Dawn Taylor, the boy's mother, said she was at work Monday night when Barboni called her and said the child wasn't breathing. She told the Syracuse Post-Standard her son's body was bruised.

Police say the baby died from severe head trauma.

Barboni pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Fulton City Court. He's being held in Oswego County jail without bail.

Efforts to find a telephone listing for his attorney were unsuccessful.

      Original Story:

A Liverpool man is being held without bail in the death of a 15-month-old child. Jay John Baroni, 30, was arraigned in Fulton City Court Thursday night. Barboni was lead into the courtroom in shackles and was a bit emotional during his brief court appearance. He remained silent.

Police say Barboni is the only suspect in the death of a 15-month-old child inside a Fulton apartment on Monday. He is charged with second degree murder.

Those who know the defendant say they don't believe he's capable of this. "In my heart, I don't believe that to be Jay. I don't. Me and him didn't get along but I'd never believe, ever, that he would so that to any child, anything at all, especially a baby," said Shannon Provost. She is the mother of Barboni's two children.

Provost told Action News the victim in this case is named Nick. She says the toddler is the child of Barboni's current girlfriend. Provost also told us on camera that Barboni had been physical with her during the course of their twelve year relationship and she eventually forced to seek an order of protection against him, which he violated on one occasion.

The multi-agency investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with any information is urged to call Fulton Police at 598-4504 or 593-TIPS (8477).
