A Central New York man has been convicted of killing his girlfriend's 15-month-old son nearly a year ago.

An Oswego County Court jury found 31-year-old Jay John Barboni of Clay guilty of second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter Tuesday evening. Authorities say Barboni was with 15-month-old Nick Taylor when the toddler died from severe head trauma last August at his mother's apartment in Fulton, 23 miles north of Syracuse.

Medical examiners concluded the child was struck in the head at least five times. Barboni maintained the baby was fine when he put him to bed.

Barboni faces a maximum sentence of life in prison when he's sentenced by County Court Judge Walter Hafner on September 4.
