A man who bought a gun into a Utica park and refused an officer's command to drop the weapon suffered a fatal chest wound after a series of shots were fired.
The man was later identified as 19-year-old Jessie Rose, of Schuyler Street in Utica.
Police in Utica say an officer responded to a report of shots fired in a wooded area of Addison Miller park at about 12:15 p.m. Sunday. The officer found a man with a long gun who refused several commands to drop his weapon.
Sgt. Steve Hauck said there were subsequent shots fired, but he could not immediately say who fired them or how many shots there were.
The unidentified officer was not hit.
The unidentified man with the gun was hospitalized with at least two wounds, one to the chest. Utica Police said Monday that the man died from his injuries.
Police say an autopsy will determine the cause of death.
The investigation is continuing.
