Authorities say the man who died during a confrontation with police in a Utica park killed himself with a shotgun blast to the stomach.
Police tell the Utica Observer-Dispatch that 19-year-old Jessie Lee Rose was fired at twice by an officer who encountered him after a report of shots being fired Sunday afternoon at the city's Addison Miller Park.
They say one of those bullets hit him in the hand as he turned the shotgun on himself.
Police Chief Mark Williams says Tuesday that Rose refused repeated orders from the officer to drop his gun.
The shooting occurred shortly after Utica's Boilermaker Road Race involving more than 11,000 runners ended near the park.
