Man pleads not guilty to breaking into home, beating Salina boy

Scott Miles in Onondaga County Court

Scott E. Miles, 35, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Onondaga County Court Tuesday morning for the alleged beating of a 12-year-old boy in Salina back in September.

Investigators say the boy was home alone sleeping at the Orchard Estates Apartment Complex on Endres Drive when Miles broke in and beat him. The boy suffered serious injuries.

Miles is facing five criminal charges, the most serious are two counts of first degree burglary. The assault charge was reduced to second degree because the boy's injuries were not severe enough to warrant a first degree charge. He is also charged with a fourth degree weapons charge for allegedly using a pool cue to beat the boy.

Miles' attorney says his client has medical issues and is taking medication for a mental illness. The attorney also says his client has no prior history of violent activity.

Miles is a registered level three sex offender sex offender and facing one charge for failing to register online as a sex offender. Prosecutors say he failed to tell them he got a new Facebook profile. They say the victim spotted Miles' profile picture online.

Because of his prior criminal record, Miles is being held without bail. He is due back in court on April 23 for a pre-trial hearing. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison.
